Jim Aalen

3676 South 2245 East

Salt Lake City, UT 84109

(801) 272-5862

Schools: Bellarmine University, BA 1972; 1 year at Catholic Theological Union.

Employment: What to do with a degree in English? I went to work for an ad agency and have worked for seven of them thus far. Lots of ads, some good pro bono work. Have done just about everything one can do at an ad agency in terms of roles. Currently Marketing Research Director for a Company that works with a lot of colleges and universities recruitment efforts

Relationships: Married Ruthlyn Butler Reeves in 1974, next year it will be 30 years. Life is rich. Two kids, Son--Damon, Daughter--Jaime, live near us here in Salt Lake. Utah is an incredibly beautiful landscape. Kind of interesting place to live, among the Mormons.

Comments: My life and career have been a world away from that mostly peaceful place and time on Newburg Road. In the Summer of 2001 I went back for a sentimental journey and visited the Monastery, Merton Center, and Bellarmine and after all the years it felt really whole.

Memories:  I remember the liturgies. But I think I really treasured the meals we shared. We took turns cooking breakfasts and, one St. Patrick's Day, someone scrambled the eggs green. I thought that was great; as I recall it was not thought to be a treasured action by some of the Elders.

Vincent Giegerich

2846 Regan Road

Louisville, KY  40206

(502) 895-5906

Schools: Completed doctoral dissertation 1969, Ph.D. from Universite de Montreal 11/24/70. Later studies at CTU ('74) and University of Louisville (Public Administration).

Employment: Taught philosophy at Bellarmine until '72; served on retreat team in Warrenton '72-74, Cincinnati '75-77, while giving retreats to religious & priests across the Midwest & southwest without great distinction. Left Passionists 6/17/77, returning to Louisville. Worked as switchboard operator for Courier-Journal & Times '77-83. Substitute taught for Jefferson Co. Public Schools, Fall '77. Taught philosophy part-time at University of Louisville and Jefferson Community College '77-86, including courses for inmates at men's and women's state reformatories (men's class surpassed in brilliance only by those of Passionist seminarians!) Worked full-time for City of Louisville from December 1977 until retirement January 1995. Was eventually responsible for program planning & development in CETA and JTPA training of disadvantaged persons.

Relationships: Married Alberta Eiden 10/4/87. She had been an Ursuline novice at Bellarmine when I first met her in 1969. Some of you will remember her, perhaps. She remembers many of you. After I left the community in '77, she was very supportive. We became best friends first; eventually decided to risk our best friendship through marriage.

Comments: I have written a 30-page memoir and reflection about our years together from 1966-72. Some of you have seen it. If anyone would like a copy, I can Kinko it and mail you one. Also have published a book of short poems about life in my chosen neighborhood, "Riedlonn Reflections." Unfortunately the latter is out-of-print at this time. My wife and I have become members of St. Leonard Catholic Community, a parish about two blocks from our home. I was recently nominated for parish council but chose not to run, thereby preserving my freedom to be, at times, a member of the loyal opposition, advocating such "unorthodox" positions as women and married priests, welcoming gay and lesbian couples, etc., etc.

Some of you I remember better than others. All favorably, I think. Those were exciting years & deserve more praise and appreciation than they have received, for example, in the recent history of Bellarmine College's first fifty years, published locally, where we are dispatched in less than two pages. I remain good friends with many of the Passionists--after all, 31 years together was a long time--a precious time for me.

Steven's House in an Intermediate Care facility for Persons living with HIV/AIDS.  I opened it in 1992, trying to meet the needs of the pandemic at that time.  It was named after Steve Mudd, CP.  Thanks to the help of many, a few good grants, and God's grace, it still exists today with the second person I hired now in charge.

Comments: It was sort of like Animal House with prayer, some of the best years of my life.

Schools: Bellarmine BA (1969), University of Kentucky PA (1978).

Employment: Military 6 yrs, physician assistant 21 yrs in orthopedics at Harborview Med Center (UW), now with Orthopedics International, Seattle, WA.

Relationships: Married to Anh Thach. Stepfather to three awesome teens, Avon, Tony & Andrew. (Step-fatherhood proved to be a near-perfect arrangement, as an earlier battery of genetic profiling followed by a monetary settlement, stopping a slice short of surgical intervention, was contracted with the State of Kentucky to ensure that my gene pool, as they put it “would splash no further.”)

Comments: At times even now I still enjoy reminiscing the Prep days—each classmate a different memory, days filled with laughing, much kindness, and hilarious pranks, hiking, building forts, the scent of the air at night in the spring and autumn. What is easiest to remember is how I felt, and that was very happy. Sometimes when I’m stuck in a line, I try to recover one memory that I haven’t thought of since those days. A memory of that nature doesn’t surface often, but when it does it stays with you a very long time.

Memories: Though there have been many wonderful times and many memorable personalities whose life I’ve had the good fortune to share, I remember the Prep days as being the happiest time of my life.

Charlie Mattingly

2017 Cherokee Parkway

Louisville, KY 40204

(502) 451-0928

Schools: I bet I was the only CP who flunked a course at Bellarmine--French.  Had to take an American History course at Ursuline College on Lexington Road while everyone else went off to Warrenton for the summer--got to drive the car though--took some side trips. I would never have graduated if it had not been for Jim Bobula. Jim, I did go back to school ten years later.

Employment: Been working for the same health care company for the past twenty-three years--at thirty-five years of age, they offered me $13,000 and I couldn't refuse. Have worked hard over the years and rewards accelerated.

Relationships: I'm still working at it.

Comments: Remember the Pieper posters on an easel as you descended the winding staircase from the chapel on the way to the refectory the night before a fierce Bellarmine intramural football game--the fierce part John Swalina and Steve George and all those who fought so valiantly would know about. The posters were caricatures of our rivals and ourselves--a moment of lightheartedness before a display of prowess.

Bruce Brennan never liked me very much anyway, but the day concrete trucks rolled in to pour the floor in the barn, standing knee deep in concrete, he came close to hitting me up the side of the head with a shovel -- it was something about the concrete being too dry or too wet. The barn may fall some day, but that floor will remain forever.

Memories: Who helped one summer day Phil Blount and I paint all the green benches in the courtyard bright colors -- one of those fleeting moments when I thought I had gone too far. Fr. Frank got upset -- as he was duty bound -- but allowed life to go on.

Comments: I am fortunate that after leaving the Passionists I was able to spend my life in some form of church related ministry. This September I will celebrate 30 years as an ethicist. I am very much interested in a reunion.

Memories: I am very proud of my formative years in the Passionists--great memories and a tremendous blessing. My class (1965-1968) had great fun and got great reactions from the other Bellarmine students when we told them we were going to the monastery for noon time Sext. They didn't always hear the (t) and were more than eager to join us.

Schools: Bellarmine 66-67. Transferred to DePaul University (Chicago)- January 68. B.A. Political Science 1970.

Employment: City of Chicago, Civil Service Commission (Dept. of Personnel) 1970-1973. In November of 1973 I was selected for a position in the federal government at the General Services Administration (Chicago) Personnel Department. Worked for GSA until 1977 when I received a promotion to the Chicago District personnel office of the Internal Revenue Service. I stayed with IRS for 26 + years, and was lucky to have had progressively more responsible personnel and training positions in the local, regional and national offices of the IRS without ever having to move out of Chicago.

Relationships: While working for the City of Chicago I met, dated and eventually married Elizabeth Haney. I'm sure Beth wonders why she ever agreed to marry me but we've had a great time together. We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary in June of 2004. We have no children.

Comments: I first stumbled on this web site when John Hollon tracked me down about two months before the reunion in Louisville. I was excited...and apprehensive about the reunion. Now the reunion has taken place and I have no idea why I was apprehensive. I had a fabulous time renewing old friendships and meeting new people, and my wife really enjoyed meeting everyone. The gang who planned the reunion did a great job. Everything about the weekend was wonderful. Thank you so much.

Comments: I have the panels in the pictures. Steve Rose and I had to remove them from the basement of St. Agnes when they began to renovate that space. I plan to erect inside my rural cabin (if I ever get it built) on some land I own in Nelson County near Gethsemane Monastery. I still have vivid memories of shaking Thomas Merton's hand as we left the ordination of Dan Walsh in 1967.

Employment: I have been a computer programmer for 26 years, and am teaching seventh graders in our parish PSR.
Relationships: Wife's name is Debra. She is a physical therapist.  Khristian, 20, and Megan, 18, were both second in their high school graduation class. Both were offered several scholarships, and accepted the ones for Truman University, Kirksville, MO. Both take after their father.  Kristen went to S. Africa this past summer to do medical things with giraffes, water buffalo, lions, and other impressive sounding animals. I think she will probably settle on teaching college biology.  Megan has gone to the January, Pro-Life March for several years, and plans to go this coming year. She has also been involved in several other religion related projects, and has received several awards at various speech and math competition. She is probably going to be a Carmelite.

Comments: WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU GUYS ?! YOU ALL LOOK LIKE OLD MEN.
I don't know when I knew that God did not want me to be a priest, but I knew that He wanted me to be a Passionist, at that time, and at that place. For a long time I called that time God's Greatest Gift to me. More recently, I have come to realize that it was just an early chapter. I thought that what we experienced was the same in every seminary. I have tried to tell a few priests about it, and their eyes called me a liar. The only one who understood is a Franciscan who was in Te Zey while I was in Louisville.

I know that I would not have been able to graduate from college if God had not given me the support of the community, but that may be the least significant of His gifts. I never would have learned so much about God, about His love, and about what He wants His church to be. On the other hand, if it were not for that time, it would not hurt so much to see what they are doing to the Church that the Holy Spirit had John build.

Recently I finished reading a biography of St. Therese of Lisieux. I learned that we have a similar sense of humor. During the last days before she died of TB at age 24, she and her three sisters were talking about the superior's refusal to allow the sisters to receive daily Communion. Therese said, "I'll have to take care of that after I die." And she did. Lately, when I am bothered by something that is happening in the church, I have noticed myself saying, "Well, I'll have to take care of that when I become Pope."

Memories: I would not trade a moment of the time I spent in training and as a member of the Passionist Community. "The Barn" was truly a special place that brings back many fond memories. I also was one of the fortunate few that got to live in "Grosse Pointe" the trailer that formed an annex between the Monastery and the Barn. The friends, experiences and memories from that time are still amazingly fresh in my mind. I look forward to hearing from more folks and hope to see everyone next year.

Employment: 3 years as an Emergency Services Dispatcher (Pomona, California), 4 years as a Director of Religious Education (Florida and Houston), 3 years as a caseworker, 3 years auto leasing, several years of pizza delivery and recently as a cab driver.  Start as a caseworker for a behavioral health agency in Tucson on Jan. 5th, 2004.

Relationships: Two ex-wives, two bankruptcies, five children. The youngest received a scholarship to Arizona State, two are prospering through the Internet. One has been in trouble with the law and the other, like his dad, has bipolar disorder.

Comments: I have very fond memories of the guys in Louisville. Not only because of the innocence of the time and the fun we shared but because those years were my last healthy years before the bipolar disorder kicked in at the end of my senior year. It has been a different kind of spirituality ever since. In spite of this, achievements have occurred. I single-handedly caught a serial rapist. Arizona's football coach used my plays to beat UCLA in 1990, 42-0, and USC, 38-3, in 1991 when they were #1. And I healed a dove which had been run over by a car; when I prayed and touched its wing it rebuilt itself from the bottom up. The next day I attempted to heal a crippled woman but only killed a tree in the process. Oh well.  During my most recent bout of depression, I kept singing "Yes, I shall arise"--after all these years, that song remains with me still.

Memories: Yeah, that is me in the football picture on the left side holding on to the another guy's shirt.

I wound up back at Pitney Bowes and after 18 months there I decided to start my own business. A friend who was also with Pitney joined me in starting our own mailing service company. We have been in business for 9 years and it has really been a lot of hard work but very successful.
Relationships: I married Teresa Holtzman from Our Mother Of Sorrows in 1972, best thing that ever happened to me. We have 3 children. Amy is married with three children of her own, (grand kids are great), Sara is in U of L Medical School and Steven, who just turned 21 is in U of L Speed school. Teresa is the Director of Pregnancy Helpline. This is a non-profit agency which provides women with an alternative to abortion and also provides assistance to those in need.
Comments: The years in the Prep, Detroit and Louisville were great. The memories are so vivid that it all seems like yesterday. Teresa and I are excited about the reunion and look forward to seeing everyone.

Comments: The time i spent in Louisville I remember fondly and it certainly centered around the Barn. I remember the Barn being a quiet place to get away to study during the day and a fun place to talk, wrestle, and socialize at night. It was a great year at Louisville, besides really not liking the college, the companionship of the guys was the best ever: Highlights were playing football on the lower fields, my daily runs through Louisville especially in the spring as the trees and flowers blossomed, skinny dipping in the pool at night, sleeping out on the porch till it snowed, always expecting a prank to come my way or planning one, decorating rooms and halls, debating all over the country with the Bellarmine debate team, socializing with the college kids, that special Passionist spiritual companionship the Passionist that held us so tight, the wonderful example and relationships with the priests and brothers.

Schools: Masters degree in medicine, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, 1973-75

Employment: Emory University, Instructor, Anesthesia 1975-78.  Physician Assistant in Anesthesia, Anesthesia Associates of Louisville, 1978-present.

Relationships: I married Joyce Jeffers, Bellarmine class of '70, a major babe, and we have a set of twins Ryan and Josh, who are 28, and Kevin, 21

Comments: After studying in Atlanta, I moved back to Louisville, joined St. Agnes Church, been doing anesthesia at the same hospital for the last 25 years. Got fat then got thin, learned French, traveled a lot with the boys and Joyce, and generally had a fine time.

Memories: I enjoyed the years that I was with the Passionists, except the semester I roomed with John Patrick Day, God love him.  I was staying with my family at the retreat house when the monastery was hit by the earthquake.  Joyce and I got to tour Sts. John and Paul when we were in Rome and Joyce and I attended the 150 year anniversary of the Passionists come to America, in Philadelphia last year. All this tells you that the Passionists are not far from my heart. Although, I do have a recurring nightmare that I am back in the monastery, go figure!

Schools: Bellarmine College, 1971; CTU, Fall 1971; Georgetown U. Law Center, 1981

Employment: It's been quite a ride, starting with being a change boy at Harrah's Club in Reno after leaving the Passionists in 1972. (That shouldn't be a surprise -- remember the Harolds Club nights in the barn and at Bellarmine?) Then, newspaper reporter in Las Vegas (1972-75), working as Ron Mazzoli's press aide in Washington for six months in 1975, later editing a weekly paper for the National League of Cities in DC (1978-80) , back to Las Vegas as a deputy city attorney (1982-88) after finishing law school. Began a new career in immigration law in 1988, going to San Francisco to work for the INS. In that time, I spent 2+ years in the INS Washington District Office in Arlington VA, and returned to SF to an assignment in the US Attorney's Office, defending the INS (always a challenge!). Since January 2001, I've been an immigration judge in the Department of Justice, first in Detroit and -- again -- back in San Francisco.

Comments: I remember my time in Louisville as one of the best in my life. It was certainly a time of turmoil, but those were the times, in the community, the Church and the country. It was a time of formation in more ways than one. My life has been richer because of my years in Louisville, and the persons I lived with and grew close to there.

Memories: Last summer I drove past General Butler State Park between Louisville and Cincinnati for the first time in many years. It brought back all sorts of memories of our outings there. And that's just the beginning. . . .
